The Eagle Expansion Pack 1 is an add-on for the DAZ eagle figure.  You must purchase the eagle prior to (or in addition to) the expansion pack.  If you do not have the Eagle yet, you can get a $10 discount if you purchase both EXP1 and the Eagle, until October 1st.  See the EXP page at DAZ for details (link below.)

Eagle Expansion Pack 1 Features:

New remapping of the eagle figure, for more detailed and accurate texturing.  (See the Big Wing Eagle for a free preview.)  Bump maps for legs, wings, and tail, and two transparency maps to ruffle the flight feathers.

Two new base figures: Buteo and Falconid, with 22 texture map sets and 25 "species pose" files to automatically transform them into different species and variants, including textures and life-sized scaling.   (Click here to see the species list.)

A large assortment of morphs for the legs, wings, tail, and body, including a morph to flatten the leg fringes when the legs are tucked back, a full crop morph, and anatomically accurate shapes for the primary feathers.  (See the Big Wing Eagle for a free preview.)  Also included are the base head shaping morphs to create your own variations.  (Click here for more morph info.)

Poses: perching poses, stoop, and strike, as well as wing-folding poses specifically designed for the Buteo and Falconid body types. (Click here to see the wings folded poses.)   Two animation sequences: Wing Flap cycle and Strike Sequence.  (Click here to see the animations.)

Free falconry gear is available for all your bird of prey needs.  Including hood (with morphs to fit all species), jesses & bells, a perch, and a posable lure with swapping lure type (bird and rabbit).  Also falconer's gloves (right and left handed), designed for use on any figure.  Click here to download the goodies.

Instructions & Trouble-Shooting  (Please read, the EXP1 works a little differently than normal figures)

First, load the base figure for the particular species type you wish to use. Buteo for broad-winged hawks, Falconid for the falcons and kites. (Note: these appelations are not scientifically accurate, some of the 'buteo' hawks are actually accipiters, and kites are not the same species as falconids. These names aren't meant to be scientifically accurate. They just sounded better than "short wing" and "pointy wing.")

Then go to the Pose libraries and apply the specific "species pose" you want. That should do it, your bird will be automatically loaded with the proper textures, morphed, and scaled to the correct size.

NOTE: do not apply Falconid speciae to the Buteo base body or vice versa. Not only will your bird be anatomically innacurate, but the wing joints will not work properly.

You can switch species within each set, if you like. Remember to save your pose before you do, as the Species Pose will reset the figure in its default position.

BUMP MAPS:  these are provided as jpg images, for easier download, and to allow you to edit them, if you desire.  Before using the EXP1 Species Pose files, you should convert them to BUM format.  The quickest way is to assign them as a bump map to the ground plane when you open Poser.  In the material editor, select the ground, and in the bump tab, load EXP-BB.JPG  and then EXP-WB.JPG from the ..\textures\exp1 directory.  Poser 4 will convert them to BUM format for you.

Trouble-Shooting

Pro Pack Freaks Out over BUM Files

This can be fixed by opening the pz2 files in a text or cr2 editor, and doing a search for ".bum" and replacing with ".jpg".  Or, if you don't want to do all that work, you can download the Pro Pack versions of the Species Poses here.

Eagle Poses Mess Up the Eyes

Several of the EXP1 birds use eye translations to move their eyes forward. Regular poses will move the eyes back. To remedy this, simply select the eye and hit Ctrl-E (on PC) to restore the element to it's proper position. When you save eagle poses, you may wish to select a subset and uncheck the eyes.

Wings Come Out Wrong in Perched Poses

The Perched Poses are made with the Big Wing Eagle, using its Wing Fold settings.  The Buteo and Falconid wings use different specific settings, and thus the wing fold posing is not interchangable.  Use the Poses named WingFold-B and WingFold-F for the Buteo and Falconid, respectively.  These poses will affect ONLY the wings, so apply them after you use the perching poses.

Leg Retraction Pose Sticks Up Through Tail

Select the BODY and use the Legs-FringeFlatten morph to fold those leg fringes down when the legs are retracted.  (The Pose file will not save the FBM settings.)

Wings Have Part of the Leg Texture and Blank Spots on Them When Textured

The tail and wings use a separate map from the rest of the body (similar to the Millenium figures by DAZ3D, which use different maps for the body and head).  Make sure you are loading the wing colour maps (*-WC.jpg) on the materials labelled "tail," "wings," and "wingcovers."

Wing Feathers and/or Tail Feathers Look Too Ragged (or Not Ragged Enough)

The Species Pose files load a default transparency map for the tail and wing feathers (exp-wx1), which has some feather notching for greater realism.  If you do not wish to see the feather notching, simply set the "tail" and/or "wings" materials' transparency settings to 0%.  There is also an exp-wx2, which has more pronounced notching, if you wish a more disheveled bird.  Also remember you can mix them, and use one on the wing feathers, and the other on the tail feathers.

Installation Trouble

You must own the DAZ (Zygote) eagle, and have it installed before installing the EXP1.  If you have difficulty with the installers, you should contact tech@daz3d.com.
